Building the next generation of transport talent
Project ROUTE – a new collaboration between ITS UK and Digdata – aims to respond to the digital skills challenge in transport by opening up real pathways into data roles for young people.
Our mission
Project ROUTE will support new jobs and placements, offer thousands of students hands-on work experience, and help even more young people to become transport-aware.
Together, these milestones reflect a shared ambition: to build a stronger, more diverse and better-prepared future workforce for the sector.

“This is a brilliant initiative that will open the door for more young people to explore rewarding, meaningful careers in transport technology. Strong digital skills are vital for navigating the challenges and opportunities in the transport sector.”

How we achieve it
We will deliver a series of engaging, accessible initiatives that introduce students to real-world transport data challenges, build practical data skills, and highlight the wide range of career opportunities across the sector.
Online Career Challenges
Open to students across secondary, further, and higher education, our virtual Career Challenges combine live briefings with hands-on data analysis based on real transport issues. Accessible nationwide and designed for self-paced learning, students complete innovative bite-sized projects that build data literacy, showcase sector careers, and earn certification. Challenges remain available post-event, giving students ongoing opportunities to gain experience and visibility.
Onsite Data Days
Delivered in schools to entire year groups of up to 200 students, Onsite Data Days provide an immersive, full-day experience built around our Career Challenge activities. Working in small teams, students tackle real transport data problems, build data literacy skills, and present their work to transport professionals. The programme develops practical experience, highlights career pathways and rewards participation with virtual certification—a great way to spot emerging talent.
Classroom Resources
Designed for Key Stage 3 and 4 students, our curriculum-aligned Classroom Resources are delivered by teachers to bring real-world transport applications of maths into the classroom. These resources are fully inclusive, easy to deliver without technology, and show students how this core curriculum subject can open doors to exciting careers in transport. Students develop practical skills, gain confidence in data-driven problem solving, and receive certification for their participation.
Data future events
Our virtual Data Future Events invite students across secondary, further and higher education to meet relatable transport role models and hear about their career journeys. Students gain insight into entry pathways, the recruitment process, and the variety of careers available in the sector. These inclusive sessions show students that a career in data-driven transport is achievable for anyone.
