Clearview Intelligence launches SolarLite ‘Impact Challenge’ to help authorities improve road safety and cut carbon
Three UK highway schemes will each receive up to 100 solar-powered road studs supplied free of charge with standard installation included.
Clearview Intelligence is inviting local authorities across the UK to nominate challenging locations on their road networks for the chance to receive up to 100 SolarLite active road studs supplied free of charge with installation included.
In partnership with the Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG), the SolarLite Impact Challenge aims to select three schemes where active road stud technology could improve road safety after dark or help reduce carbon emissions and costs associated with street lighting. Entry is completely free and open to local and highway authorities across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, including National Highways and Transport Scotland.
Authorities are encouraged to identify roads or junctions where safety is a recurring concern, particularly after dark or where ageing street lighting assets and their associated energy costs are creating costly challenges. Road safety and carbon efficiency will carry equal weight in assessing submissions.
Karl Rourke, Street Lighting Service Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “Our work in East Riding has demonstrated the potential of SolarLite active road studs to provide clear guidance after dark while reducing reliance on conventional street lighting. Assessing the tech in real-world scenarios has helped us better understand its potential.”
Alastair King, Head of SolarLite at Clearview Intelligence, said, “Bring us a location where road safety after dark remains a concern or where aging street lighting is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. We will work with the winning authorities to select the right SolarLite product and layout for the job then help you assess its impact over time.”
Susanne Ingham, Relationship Manager at LCRIG, said, “The learning from this Impact Challenge will extend beyond the three winning authorities. Sharing practical experience and robust evidence will help other highway teams assess where innovative technology could work on their own networks.”
SolarLite road studs use solar energy collected during daylight to power integrated LEDs, providing illuminated guidance for drivers without the need for a mains electricity supply. The challenge builds upon work led by East Riding of Yorkshire Council through the ADEPT Live Labs 2, exploring active road studs as part of an approach to reduce reliance on conventional street lighting at suitable locations.
Authority applicants will be asked to simply describe their chosen location, the problem they want to address and the intended outcomes. A judging panel bringing together representatives from ADEPT, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, LCRIG, SolarLite and the Department for Transport will assess the submissions. The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2026. Three successful authorities are expected to be notified before Christmas 2026 with installation planned between January and March 2027.
