Alice O’Brien
Senior Technical Consultant, WSP
I am a Senior Technical Consultant at WSP with 5 years of experience working in Intelligent Transport Systems, specialising in operational technology and data analysis within both national and local transport environments. I have worked in technical roles in both consultancy and public sector organisations, gaining experience in systems assurance, data governance and reporting, and strategy development for future technologies.
I joined WSP as a graduate in the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) team, where I supported a range of National Highways projects focused on operational technology. Through these, I built a detailed understanding of operational technology systems, from roadside to operations centres, and their associated fault management processes. Using this, I led the creation of dashboards and reporting tools that enabled National Highways to take data driven maintenance and performance decisions. I subsequently joined the Asset Condition team at Transport for London, where I worked in cross-disciplinary teams to help them make data-driven decisions about maintenance of transport assets. Throughout both roles I successfully engaged with diverse stakeholder groups from different backgrounds, balancing competing priorities for project delivery.
Since returning to WSP last year, I have continued to develop through project delivery and industry engagement. I am currently part of the National Enforcement Compliance Solution (NECS) programme, providing technical assurance for the development of the next generation of speed cameras. In this role I lead the design and implementation of a new asset monitoring system, which has involved managing client and supplier relationships throughout a complex programme.
I take an active role in the ITS industry, having presented at ITS UK forums where I shared my own expertise. I previously held a role as the vice-chair of the Mobility as a Service forum, through which I facilitated knowledge-sharing workshops. I have always been committed to promoting wider engagement in engineering and transport technology. I mentor apprentices within WSP and have previously been responsible for chairing meetings of our internal Early Careers Professionals community, helping to provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, informal support, and professional development. I was instrumental in organising our first ITS Early Careers conference day, to provide early careers professionals in our discipline with networking opportunities, which was attended by senior business leaders and external speakers from the industry. I have also developed and delivered STEM workshops for a local secondary school, supporting efforts to broaden awareness of careers in engineering and to encourage participation from under represented groups.
I’ve received both internal and external recognition for my performance, including being shortlisted for the ITS UK for Early Career Professional of the Year award, and winning WSP’s Ian Patey Prize for Technical Excellence. This supported my attendance at the 2025 ITS World Congress, where I contributed to ITS UK activities and expanded my network through international forums.
