Irene McAleese

Co-founder & Director, Strategy and Partnerships, See.Sense

Irene McAleese is Co-founder and Director, Strategy and Partnerships at See.Sense, a cycling and micromobility technology company she founded with Philip McAleese in Northern Ireland in 2013. See.Sense develops AI-enabled sensor technology that turns bikes, e-scooters and fleet vehicles into moving sensors, giving cities and operators a detailed view of the rider’s experience on the road, including braking, swerving, road surface quality, delays and route choice.

At See.Sense, Irene has led partnerships with cities, transport authorities and researchers worldwide. These include:

  • Transport for London and RoSPA: connected cycling data identified road safety risks before collisions occurred. This work won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
  • University of Exeter (DIGIT Lab): AI and big-data analysis of See.Sense cycling data produced dashboards now used by councils in the UK and Australia, winning two 2026 Digital Leaders AI Impact Awards.
  • The iMOVE project in Melbourne: cycling sensor data was combined with connected vehicle and SCATS traffic signal data to bring cyclists into multimodal traffic management.
  • Forum Virium Helsinki, Tier-Dott and Vianova:Sense sensors on shared e-scooters showed that scooter fleets can act as a low-cost, city-wide safety sensing network. The data pinpointed high-risk junctions, tram tracks and crossings, and showed how wet weather and speed-limit geofencing affect rider safety.
  • Dublin City Council: road surface data informed the design of cycling infrastructure.
  • Milton Keynes and Essex County Council: cycling data supported active travel planning.

Irene is also Co-founder of Active Travel Insights, an Australian business that combines static counters with in-motion sensors to measure walking and cycling.

Before See.Sense, Irene held roles at Accenture, BT and Queensland Rail. She holds a Bachelor of Behavioural Science in Applied Psychology from Griffith University and is an alumna of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses programme at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Irene is a UK Department for Business and Trade Export Champion and a former Board Member of Cycling Industries Europe. She has been recognised as a Women in Cycling Ambassador and a Northern Ireland Women in Business Award winner.
