Michael Wevill
Director, Equal Route Ltd
I am now a Director at Equal Route Ltd. This is my own company that was set up to provide consultancy services to organisations of all sizes working in public and sustainable transport with a focus on fares and ticketing with the supporting elements. I am currently supporting authorities in the UK and overseas in the implementation of sustainable smart ticketing and technology supported customer innovations.
Areas that I have recently advised upon include:
• Advanced Account Based Ticketing Caps
• Choice of Travel Token
• Data Migration and Analysis
• cEMV Tokenisation standardisation
• Procurement opportunities, approaches and assessments
• Providing MaaS advice around ticketing and wider elements
Prior to this I was Projects Director at SYSTRA UK. Projects for SYSTRA included developing specifications for ABT solutions, RTI replacement specifications together with additional elements such as the preparation of feasibility studies and proposals. A key part of my expertise was around revenue apportionment solutions.
The bulk of my twenty-three years spent working in the Transport Industry was working for Transport for West Midlands. During my tenure at TfWM I was initially responsible for concessionary payments to bus operators before transitioning to smart ticketing for their highly successful Swift smart ticketing solution.
My role was extensive and included most of the technical design of Swift together with elements of project and programme management. Swift led the country in many aspects of smart ticketing and as a result part of my role was prototyping reports and analysis. The prototypes were then used to test the solutions provided by eventual suppliers.
I ensured that Swift had a comprehensive test suite with every single item of equipment contained in one room allowing every element to be tested. Swift was the first role out of bus electronic ticket machines to buses where every single machine had been tested by us before deployment. The Swift Go ABT capping solution introduced revolutionary new methods of capping. Critically customers could access Swift Go without needing a credit or debit card.
I designed the Buy Before you Board solution that will offer off tram ticketing for West Midlands Metro via a combination of ticket machines and validators, that will accept contactless cards, barcodes and ITSO cards.
I was the original subject matter expert for the TfWM West Midlands broker project now known as Project Coral.
I have been an ITSO non-Exec Director as well as chairing the ITSO members group that was instrumental in ensuring that operators and authorities were able to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the ITSO specification, by working in a consistent manner.
I am currently proud to be a member of the West Midlands Committee for Women in Transport. This enables me to act as an ally to women in the transport sector.
The first fourteen years of my career was as a financial accountant for a large firm of Chartered Accountants with a focus on systems and automation. The accountancy background gives me essential grounding when working in public transport as every solution must be affordable.
