Tim Morris
Principal Engineer, Arup
Tim is an experienced transport engineering professional with substantial technical knowledge of intelligent mobility solutions and transport systems, that underpin multi-modal freight transport policy and operations.
Tim has built knowledge and expertise of the land and maritime freight and logistics sectors over the course of his career, through projects for key sector clients like the Port of Dover, the Dubai RTA, Lloyd’s Register and the Resilience Rising partnership.
Using his ability to interpret the value potential of complex technical concepts, Tim has influenced credibly up, down and across organisational stakeholders, whilst applying strategic and technical skills to develop integrative ITS solutions that support wider land and marine based mobility strategies and public realm policy; enabling and facilitating reliable and resilient transport networks.
His early work included leading freight optimisation technology projects for Transport for Greater Manchester, which featured integrated technologies for improved goods movement in northern Europe.
More recently, Tim has advised transport authorities like Liverpool city Region Combined Authority and the UK Department for Transport on the opportunity to harness digital solutions to improve the visibility and active management of freight and logistics operations in and on route to ports.
Tim has proactively provided thought leadership across industry challenges to senior policy and decision makers and is adept at bringing stakeholders together around shared challenges. Tim’s strong focus on creating sustainable and resilient mobility services from the effective development and integration of transport systems supports the wider landscape of transport decarbonisation and global goals for a cleaner, safer and more accessible and equitable planet.
Tim’s approach of adopting an inclusive, collaborative, cross-sector approach to stakeholder engagement, building and maintaining strong, productive relationships to gain in depth understanding of user needs, is well suited to the freight sector; helping unlock multiple benefits from complex systems and ensuring solutions meet intended outcomes across the stakeholder ecosystem.
Tim’s passion for maritime and freight transport and the infrastructure systems that enable global shipping, has led him to proactively develop and maintain knowledge of core themes and developments across the industry. This has helped develop opportunities to drive forward initiatives like Coastal and Inland Shipping, where Tim has advocated for ITS technology solutions.
Tim has applied his ITS and freight and logistics expertise to the sharing of knowledge and building of skills, in roles as Global Network Manager for the Intelligent Mobility skills network and Digital champion for the Maritime skills network in Arup.
Through his role as chair of ITS UK’s Maritime Forum, Tim has promoted the application of digital ITS technologies to transform processes in shipping and port operations and enhance connectivity with land-based transport interfaces.
Tim organized and facilitated events, bringing together maritime and ITS stakeholders to build common appreciation of technical solutions and share knowledge on emerging technologies and environmental compliance strategies. He has sought to endorse global best practices in Intelligent Transport Systems, demonstrating their application to shipping, ports, and logistics to enhance safety, operational efficiency and performance, sustainable environmental outcomes, and positive economic returns.
