TomTom and Aimsun Partner to Accelerate Transport Planning

Aimsun

TomTom, the specialist in mapping and location technology, and Aimsun, a specialist in transport simulation software, today announced a strategic partnership to help cities and transport authorities deliver smarter, faster mobility solutions.

This collaboration brings together TomTom’s trusted maps and traffic data with Aimsun’s advanced simulation tools, including the new Aimsun Start ready-to-calibrate model. With Aimsun Start, transport modellers can skip weeks of manual setup and begin their projects immediately. This is possible thanks to high-quality, simulation-ready models built from accurate network geometry and origin–destination matrices derived from TomTom’s reliable and representative datasets.

The Partnership benefits customers through:

Accelerated Project Delivery: Customers receive a ready-to-calibrate transport model within five working days. This allows calibration and analysis to begin immediately, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual coding or data collection, thanks to high-quality, data-driven inputs.

Improved Accuracy: Actual traffic patterns and highly representative data ensure every Aimsun Start model reflects current network conditions and travel behaviour, delivering more reliable and actionable insights for decision-makers.

Flexible & Scalable Modelling: TomTom’s fresh and accurate maps as well as comprehensive data coverage mean models can be adapted to projects of any size or complexity, from a single corridor to an entire city.

Cost Savings: Using robust, data-backed demand matrices reduces reliance on costly field surveys, lowers setup costs and expedites delivery.

Reliable Data Sourcing: All network and demand data is sourced from trusted, high-fidelity datasets, ensuring consistency, quality, and compatibility across every project.

Real-World Impact

Aimsun Start is already delivering value for clients around the world, including SCT Consulting in the Australian Capital Territory.

By providing a pre-coded, data-rich simulation environment with high-resolution network geometry and GPS-derived demand matrices, Aimsun Start enabled SCT to respond rapidly to their client’s needs and manage resources more effectively. This meant faster project delivery, lower data collection costs, and a reliable, up-to-date foundation they can trust.

Aimsun operates under both Solution Provider and Distributor Agreements with TomTom, ensuring competitive pricing and flexible sourcing options for diverse project needs.

Ian McCarthy, CEO of Aimsun, commented: “With Aimsun Start — powered by our collaboration with TomTom — we’re helping our customers to modernise their modelling workflows, reduce setup time, improve data accuracy, and enhance the quality of every decision they make.

This is just the beginning of a broader integration of TomTom’s data into Aimsun’s solutions. Soon, this data will also power our real-time tools, advancing mobility intelligence and supporting the transition to safer, more efficient and sustainable network operations.”
