Bath & North East Somerset adopts Yunex Traffic’s Stratos UTMC solution to deliver smarter, integrated traffic management

Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) Council has chosen Yunex Traffic’s Stratos Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) solution to replace its existing UTMC solution with a more efficient, resilient and future-ready approach to network management. Following a comprehensive review of its operational needs and an extensive tender process, the Council selected Stratos for its ability to deliver immediate performance gains and enhanced control of day-to-day traffic management operations.

B&NES’ new cloud-hosted Stratos platform provides a modern, intuitive environment that significantly improves how the traffic team manages the network. Key benefits include simpler and more flexible VMS legend setting, particularly for RGB signs, and a user-friendly Strategy Manager capability that supports logic and conflict checking. Integrated Count Data functionality enables pedestrian crossing sites to be automatically placed under SCOOT control, while also allowing the Council to set clear UTC and UTMC command priority levels.
The Stratos solution enhances connectivity across the network through remote handsets, browser-based access and remote firmware updates and upgrades. The core Stratos modules were fully deployed and commissioned by 31 March, with custom programming and full functionality testing scheduled for completion by 30 June, ahead of final Council acceptance.
Scalable and futureproof, the Stratos configuration selected by the council includes the Traffic Signals / Outstations module for monitoring asset status and fault data, alongside SCOOT and traffic count site data. The Environmental Data Module is connected to EarthSense air quality sensors, while the Strategy Manager supports both data driven and timetable driven strategies.
The Stratos Car Park Guidance and Variable Message Sign modules are also included, with a secure VPN linking the B&NES network to fibre-led signs and National Highways VMS legends. The system is completed with the Stratos Data Reporting and Download module, which features manual download functions and Traffic Flow Data API for feeding data to the council website.
Proven in authorities across the UK, Stratos UTMC brings all B&NES’ existing traffic management functions together under an integrated platform. By combining scalable architecture with powerful strategy management capabilities, the solution delivers a streamlined, automated and future proof approach to traffic management.
