Clearview Intelligence and Prismo launch new heavy-duty SolarLite® S381 active road stud following DfT Type Approval
Clearview Intelligence and Prismo launch the SolarLite® S381, a new heavy-duty solar-powered active road stud designed specifically for heavily trafficked roads following the award of Department for Transport (DfT) Type Approval.
The new SolarLite S381 combines Clearview’s proven SolarLite active road stud technology with Prismo’s robust cast iron housing to create a durable solution that can be installed using the same industry-standard methods as conventional reflective road studs.
It means highway authorities and white lining contractors can upgrade from passive reflective road studs to active solar guidance without changing established installation methods or undertaking additional civil engineering works.
SolarLite S381 has been specifically designed to withstand the demanding conditions found on the strategic and heavily trafficked road networks. The heavy-duty cast iron shoe provides enhanced protection against HGVs and winter maintenance operations, including snow ploughs.
SolarLite S381 uses the same proven SolarLite technology already installed at thousands of locations throughout the UK, delivering highly visible route guidance powered by integrated solar cells. Operating automatically from dusk until dawn, each road stud can store enough energy to run for up to 7 days without sunlight.
Unlike conventional reflective road studs, which rely entirely on vehicle headlights for illumination, SolarLite actively projects bright LED light visible from distances up to 900m, compared with 90m for a reflective road stud in good conditions. This gives drivers earlier warning of bends, junctions and other hazards, improving visibility and reaction times, particularly at night and in adverse weather conditions.
For highway authorities, Tier 1 contractors and white lining companies, the SolarLite S381 provides a premium, lower-carbon road safety solution that can be installed using standard installation practices, with little impact on planned maintenance and renewal programmes.
Powered entirely by solar energy, the SolarLite S381 requires no mains electricity and incurs no ongoing energy costs, providing authorities with a sustainable alternative to additional street lighting in appropriate locations. Findings from the ADEPT Live Labs 2 programme demonstrated that alternative visual guidance could reduce carbon emissions by up to 25% and deliver savings of £1.24m over 10-years compared with alternative conventional street lighting solutions.
Alastair King, Head of SolarLite at Clearview Intelligence, said, “SolarLite active road studs are already helping improve safety on roads across the UK. Our SolarLite S381 builds on that proven technology by introducing a heavy-duty cast iron housing that many highway authorities require for their busiest roads.”
“Working with Prismo has enabled us to combine proven SolarLite technology with an industry-standard cast iron housing, making it easier than ever for highway authorities and their contractors to introduce active road guidance during routine maintenance and renewal programmes.”
James Moore, Managing Director at Prismo, said, “We are delighted to have worked with Clearview Intelligence on the SolarLite S381. Together, we’ve combined our proven heavy-duty cast-iron housing with Clearview’s market-leading SolarLite technology to create a solution that meets the demanding requirements of today’s road network.
“Because the SolarLite S381 can be installed using established industry methods, highway authorities and contractors can introduce active road studs quickly and easily, helping improve road safety on our busiest roads.”
The SolarLite S381 is available on 9 July 2026.
