Intelligent Transport Address & AGM

Join ITS UK on Tuesday 21 May for the second annual Intelligent Transport Address!

We are delighted to confirm that we’ll be joined by Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer at Transport for London, who will be giving the Address this year, presenting his vision for the future of the transport industry and how technology can support the sector going forward. His Address title is: “Smart ticketing, mobility and the future of transport: Where we are and where we’re going”.

Following the Address, there will be a panel discussion on how technology can enable a better transport sector.

Before the event, we will hold our AGM, exclusively for ITS UK Members. Non ITS UK members are welcome to sign up to the Address, but will not be allowed entry before 6pm, after the AGM has concluded.

This event will take place at Amazon’s UK HQ at 1 Principal Place, London, EC2A 2FA.

The Keynote

Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer, Transport for London

Shashi is Chief Technology Officer at Transport for London. After a brief time teaching at Harvard University and then working as an engagement manager at McKinsey in London, Shashi joined TfL in September 2002.

Shashi established the Corporate Finance team within TfL with responsibility for major projects and for the development of corporate strategy. He led on the development of Crossrail, a £16 billion project to build the next railway line in London, and on other projects such as the East London Line and White City, which resulted in the building of the Westfield shopping Centre.

Since 2006 Shashi has been responsible for the operation of TfL’s revenue collection system including the Oyster card, the largest smartcard based ticketing system in the world; and, advising the Mayor of London on fares and ticketing policy. In 2011 he added responsibility for integrating all customer facing activities and for running TfL’s customer service operations. Shashi has led the development of contactless payments since 2007 and implemented this successfully on TfL’s systems starting in 2012 creating a globally successful change to the payments system. In the process he has developed capability for technology development and globally leading innovation in a public sector organisation.

Since 2017 Shashi has been responsible for TfL’s integrated delivery of technology and has built a record of technology-led transformation.

In September 2021, Shashi was appointed to the Board of the Royal Mail plc as a Non-Executive Director. He is also a Trustee at the Centre for London.

Shashi has a Bachelor of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and a Master’s in Public Policy and an unfinished Ph.D. in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He taught at the Kennedy School for a year and received an award for excellence in teaching.

Bharat Pathania
Head of New Technologies, Midlands Connect

As Head of New Technologies, Bharat is leading the technology and innovation program at Midlands Connect. Midlands Connect is a Sub National Transport Body in Midlands. The partnership includes 22 Local Transport Authorities across Midlands, Local Enterprise Partnerships, National Highways, Network Rail, HS2 and DfT.

Bharat role includes developing and delivering strategies across a broad portfolio of transport technologies in Midlands. This includes but not limited to development of business cases and funding asks to DfT/HM Treasury, development of region/nationwide multi modal contactless ticketing technical solution, Mobility as a Service, major road network technology, Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure, 5G revolution, alternative fuel technologies, identifying technology gaps and creating technology route maps/actions plans over the next 30 years.

Matthew Peake
Director of Public Policy & Government, Trainline

Matt is Director of UK Policy and Government Relations at Trainline. Prior to Trainline, he led the global policy team at Onfido, a UK AI start-up focused on digital identity and biometrics. He has previously held policy-focused roles at Verizon, Ofcom and the Home Office. Matt holds a law degree from UEA, an exec MBA from Henley Business School and diplomas in Competition Law from Kings College and Business International Relations from the LSE.

 

John Chapman
UK Lead for Regional Transport Bodies, Amazon Web Services

John is the AWS UK Lead for Regional Transport authorities in the UK and works with authorities to help understand how both Amazon & AWS can support them in implementing more citizen-centric, more sustainable technologies and practices. Prior to joining AWS, John spent two-and-a-half years as the Co-Founder of a start-up specialising in the application of AI & Machine Vision in the transport sector.

 

Nathan Watt, Transport Senior Sales Specialist, BT Active Intelligence

Nathan has extensive experience in both the mobile data and transport sectors. Having been a Senior Consultant involved in transport modelling, data and transport technology, Nathan is the ideal point of contact for our customers to ensure the successful use of our data in the Transport industry. During his time at BT Active Intelligence, he has been involved in working with different customers in the transport sector to ensure they maximise the use of our data, including both road and rail.

 

Claire Spooner
Director of Mobility, Innovate UK

As Innovate UK’s Director of Mobility, Claire champions innovative sustainable solutions in the realm of mobility within the Net Zero Domain. She leads strategic transport initiatives aimed at accelerating the transition to a net zero economy, collaborating with industry, research institutions, and government bodies. Claire’s interests reach across all transport modalities, exploring innovations in AI and digital twins, connected and autonomous vehicles, sustainable aviation fuels, EV battery developments, sustainable shipping, hydrogen transport, skills development, aerospace, low and zero emissions propulsion systems, novel materials for low carbon infrastructure, and new transport modalities. She shapes the Mobility portfolio’s direction, guides strategic investments, manages programs, and fosters partnerships to develop cutting-edge technologies and services. By addressing transport challenges, Innovate UK’s Net Zero Domain contributes meaningfully to the global sustainability agenda and Net Zero targets.
