The M6toll opened in 2003 as the UK’s only strategic toll-road to alleviate congestion on the M6 and regional trunk roads such as the A5 and A38. £1bn was invested in its construction and it now carries circa 50,000 vehicles per day. The M6toll operates under a 53-year concession from the DfT with 30 years remaining and are funded through private investment and tolls collected from customers, who pay to experience a well maintained, safe and reliable road.  Since 2023, the M6toll has been owned by pension fund investors Aleatica (owned by IFM global infrastructure operator and investor of pension funds) and GLIL (the infrastructure arm of some UK local authorities pension funds). The group operates more than 1,100km of roads worldwide.
