Response to the Consultation on Automated Vehicles: Statement of Safety Principles
The Government’s draft Statement of Safety Principles (SoSP) sets out the safety expectations that will guide the authorisation, monitoring and ongoing assessment of automated vehicles in Great Britain.
The principles focus on key areas including compliance with traffic rules, maintaining safe vehicle control, anticipating and responding to hazards, adapting to road and weather conditions, behaving predictably around other road users, operating within defined limits and protecting vulnerable road users.
In its response to the consultation, ITS UK supports the draft SoSP as a strong and sensible foundation for the regulation of automated vehicles. However, it argues that the principles must be supported by clear definitions, objective metrics and practical evidence requirements.
