Transport tech body welcomes new Transport Ministers following confirmation of roles
28 July 2026: Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK), the industry association for transport technology, has welcomed today’s confirmation of ministerial responsibilities at the Department for Transport following last week’s reshuffle, highlighting the inclusion of ‘AI and Technology’ within ministerial portfolios.
Max Sugarman, Chief Executive of ITS UK, said: “We are delighted to welcome Minister Justin Madders to the roads brief and are particularly pleased to see ‘AI and Technology’ explicitly recognised within his ministerial responsibilities. ITS UK has long called for greater recognition of the role technology plays in delivering a safer, cleaner and more effective transport network, so this is a positive signal. We look forward to working closely with the Minister to help deliver the Government’s ambitions for roads, innovation and safety.
“We are also pleased to continue working with the Ministers remaining at the Department following the reshuffle, including Secretary of State Heidi Alexander, Rail Minister Lord Hendy, Aviation, Maritime and Security Minister Keir Mather, and Local Transport and Sustainability Minister Simon Lightwood. With the Government’s Better Connected Strategy, Transport Data Action Plan and Road Safety Strategy all published this year, there is a significant opportunity for Government and industry to work together to accelerate the deployment of transport technology across the UK.
“I would also like to thank Lilian Greenwood, who has moved to the Department for Work and Pensions, for her commitment, engagement and willingness to work with industry over the past two years. She has been a strong supporter of the transport technology sector, a champion of road safety, and an open and collaborative Minister. We wish her every success in her new role.”
