Yunex Traffic and TfGM extend long-term partnership
- Five-year extension reinforces long-standing partnership between Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and Yunex Traffic.
- Over a decade of delivery since 2011 has seen large-scale network modernisation across Greater Manchester.
- Extension continues focus on sustainability, innovation, and future transport needs.
Yunex Traffic has been awarded a five-year extension to its traffic signal maintenance contract with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), strengthening a partnership that has supported and modernised one of the UK’s largest urban transport networks since 2011.
Over the past 15 years, Yunex Traffic has worked in close collaboration with TfGM to maintain and enhance Greater Manchester’s extensive traffic signal infrastructure, supporting both network growth and improved reliability. The network has expanded significantly during this time, reflecting increasing demand and regional development.
Delivering large-scale network modernisation and measurable savings
A key outcome of the partnership has been the delivery of a large-scale retrofit and modernisation programme across more than 1,800 signal sites:
- Replacing over 52,000 traditional signal aspects with energy efficient LED technology.
- Reducing energy usage by 50% and providing annual cost savings of around £750,000.
The introduction of energy-efficient LED technology has improved visibility and reliability while significantly reducing energy consumption and operational costs. Additional investment in infrastructure, communications and intelligent traffic management has enabled TfGM to optimise traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance overall network performance.
Yunex Traffic has consistently maintained high levels of operational performance across the TfGM network ensuring equipment availability of between 98% and 99%. The delivery of major upgrade programmes, including large-scale communications improvements and the deployment of the latest adaptive traffic optimisation technologies, has also helped to create a more responsive and resilient transport system across Manchester.
Delivering more sustainable operations, strong partnership and community impact
With sustainability a central focus in the partnership, Yunex Traffic has transitioned its maintenance fleet to electric vehicles, supporting TfGM’s decarbonisation ambitions and contributing to improved air quality across the region. The partnership is underpinned by exceptional long-term team continuity, ensuring deep technical knowledge and consistent service delivery since 2011. Several engineers have supported the contract from the outset, with 10 team members remaining on the contract for its entire duration, providing valuable expertise and stability across the network.
Yunex Traffic also supports a range of community initiatives across Greater Manchester, including educational engagement, careers events, and employee volunteering helping to create a positive and lasting local impact alongside the delivery of essential transport services.
Steve Warrener, Chief Executive, Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “Yunex Traffic has been a valued partner in maintaining and enhancing Greater Manchester’s traffic signal network for over a decade. Their ability to deliver complex upgrade programmes at scale, alongside strong operational performance and a clear commitment to sustainability, has been instrumental in supporting our transport objectives. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership and building on these achievements in the years ahead.”
Wilke Reints, Managing Director, Yunex Traffic UK, commented: “Securing this contract extension with Transport for Greater Manchester is a testament to the strength of our partnership and the dedication of our team over many years. Since 2011, we have worked collaboratively to modernise the region’s traffic infrastructure, delivering large-scale upgrades, improved performance and meaningful sustainability benefits.
As we look ahead, we remain committed to supporting TfGM’s ambitions through continued innovation and collaboration – helping to create a smarter, greener and more resilient transport network for Greater Manchester.”
The contract extension provides a strong platform to build on this success, with continued focus on smart, sustainable traffic solutions that support the region’s long-term growth and evolving transport needs.
